Schedule I Keeps Crashing on PC: Fixes and Patch History
Short version: TVGS has patched several separate crash causes (NPC pathfinding on some chipsets, sleep black screens, multiplayer disconnects), so match your symptom to the table. Steps two or more guides agree on: verify files, update drivers, force DirectX 11 or 12, move the save folder aside (back it up first), reinstall last. TVGS's alternate (Mono) branch from April 2025 may help; we have not confirmed it is still maintained.
Community-verified, not personally tested. The PC fixes below come from public guides, and we did not run them on our own machine. The patch history comes from TVGS’s own Steam announcements. Checked Oct 17, 2026.
First: which version are you on?
As of Oct 17, 2026, TVGS’s latest announcement is v0.4.7: Special Customers (Oct 9, 2026). It opens: “Today we’re pleased to be releasing the special customers update!” So v0.4.7 is out of the open beta that started Sep 19, 2026. What changed is on our v0.4.7 page. Check yours in Steam under Properties > Betas.
Save warning if you roll back from v0.4.7. The beta post said: “Playing an existing save will automatically convert legacy appearances to the new save format. If you switch back to the default version of the game after playing this beta, any appearances that have been converted to the new format will not load properly.” The release notes don’t repeat this warning. Our reading, not confirmed by TVGS: the same applies to any save played on v0.4.7 that you later load on v0.4.6. Back up your save before you test fixes, and do not “fix” a crash by rolling back to v0.4.6 with a converted save. The release notes keep the line that one change “should result in several-hundred megabytes saved in memory use for late-game saves”. TVGS does not say this fixes crashes, so we only note it.
Find your symptom
| What happens | Start here |
|---|---|
| Crashes before the menu, or right after you press Play | Fixes 1 to 4 below, then the alternate branch |
| Crashes or freezes while a save loads | Fixes 1 and 4 (damaged save data), and the “Loading” rows in the table |
| Crashes every few minutes, or after a long session | Fixes 1 to 3, the alternate branch, and the performance rows in the table |
| Black screen when you go to sleep | Update the game. TVGS fixed two causes in March 2025 (table) |
| Drops out of a co-op game | The multiplayer rows in the table |
If the game starts but sits on the loading screen without crashing, that is a different problem from the one on this page.
Fixes that two or more independent guides agree on
Back up your save folder first. Several guides point to a TVGS folder under AppData\LocalLow; MiniTool gives the path as C:\Users\<name>\AppData\LocalLow\TVGS. TVGS has not published the save location itself.
1. Verify the game files
GamerBlurb: “Corrupt or missing files are a common cause of crashing.” MiniTool lists the same step first.
2. Update your graphics driver (and Windows)
MiniTool, GamerBlurb, The CPU Guide and schedule1game.net all list a driver update. GamerBlurb: Device Manager > Display adapters > update, or download the latest driver from NVIDIA or AMD. The CPU Guide and MiniTool also list Windows updates.
3. Force DirectX 11 or 12
MiniTool and GamerBlurb both suggest adding -dx11, -d3d11 or -dx12 to the game’s launch options (Steam: right-click the game > Properties > General > Launch Options). GamerBlurb: “Forcing the game to run on a different graphics API can help with stability.” Try one at a time.
4. Move the save folder aside to test it
Back up the TVGS save folder first: copy it somewhere outside AppData before you rename anything. GamerBlurb: “Some crashes seem tied to broken save data or game objects”. MiniTool says to rename the folder (its example is TVG.old) and relaunch. Rename, do not delete. If the game then runs stably on a new save, the problem is in your old save. Rename it back and contact TVGS with the save (below). The game also has a built-in backup: since v0.4.0 it “will automatically generate a backup of your save file when you first load it on a new version of the game”, on by default under Settings -> Other. TVGS did not say where that backup is stored.
5. Reinstall, last
MiniTool and schedule1game.net both list a reinstall. Back up the TVGS folder first.
The alternate (Mono) branch: TVGS’s own workaround
In Post-launch Patch #6 (Apr 3, 2025), TVGS made an alternate version “for anyone who is experiencing crashes”. It uses “a different scripting backend (Mono instead of IL2CPP)”, which “isn’t quite as performant as the normal version”, but “generally handles errors a bit better and is less prone to crashing.” TVGS: “If you’re experiencing consistent crashes in the default version, I’d recommend trying it out.” You opt in the way you switch to a beta: Properties > Betas.
TVGS added that if people find fewer crashes, “I’ll continue to maintain this version and keep it updated to match the default version.” We did not confirm that this branch is still offered or kept up to date today. Look in your Betas list. Back up your save before switching, and apply the same caution as for any branch change.
Crashes and related bugs TVGS has fixed
This is our own list, built from Schedule I’s Steam announcements. We include only fixes TVGS wrote as crashes, black screens, disconnects or errors. It will not match every crash on your PC: the notes rarely say “crash”. If your version is older than a row, update first.
| Date | Version | What TVGS wrote (quoted) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mar 26, 2025 | Patch #2 | “Fixed an employee configuration error that I believe was causing black screens when sleeping.” | Black screen on sleep: one cause fixed. |
| Mar 27, 2025 | Patch #3 | “Fixed null NPC element in a list causing a black screen when sleeping.” | A second sleep black-screen cause fixed the next day. |
| Mar 27, 2025 | Patch #3 | “Increased client timeout threshold to 30s - this should allow for clients to receive all necessary data when loading into a late-game save without timing out.” | Co-op joins with big saves are less likely to drop. |
| Apr 1, 2025 | Patch #5 | “Implemented a few validity checks/failsafes for NPC pathfinding and warping. I think this was one of the primary causes of crashing on certain chipsets” | The one named crash cause in the notes. Old crash advice from before April 2025 may be outdated. |
| Apr 1, 2025 | Patch #5 | “Fixed some property null references that were causing multiplayer loading/desync issues.” | Co-op load and desync errors: one cause fixed. |
| Apr 3, 2025 | Patch #6 | Alternate version added “for anyone who is experiencing crashes”. “Added ‘cleartrash’ command. Useful if you’re experiencing performance drops due to lots of trash items.” | Workaround, not a fix. See the section above. |
| Apr 10, 2025 | v0.3.4 | Next priorities: “Preventing save games getting corrupted/disappearing” and “Minimizing disconnections and loading issues in multiplayer.” | A stated goal, not a fix. |
| May 22, 2025 | v0.3.6 beta | Save files consolidated into fewer, larger ones: “In case of any bugs, please be sure to make a backup of your save game before playing it on this beta. You can use the export/import buttons in the main menu”. | Main-menu export/import is a quick backup. |
| Aug 17, 2025 | v0.4.0f2 beta | “Fixed multiplayer disconnect when knocking on Pillville.” “Fixed multiplayer disconnection when you fail pickpocketing as a non-host.” | Two specific co-op disconnects fixed. |
| Aug 22, 2025 | v0.4.0f3 beta | Spray paint now limited “so that drawings with lots of strokes don’t cause disconnections in multiplayer.” | Long drawings could drop co-op players. |
| Aug 27, 2025 | v0.4.0 | “Added an automatic save game backup feature.” | A backup exists after you first load on each new version. |
| Sep 27, 2025 | v0.4.0f8 | “Introduced some extra null checks during the loading process, both as host and non-host.” | Fewer load failures from missing data. |
| Nov 18, 2025 | v0.4.1f12 | “Fixed some null reference errors that happen when a player leaves the game while wanted or in combat.” “Fixed the lag spike that occurred as the loading screen closed.” | Errors when a co-op player leaves: fixed. |
| Aug 1, 2026 | v0.4.6 | “Stripped lots of shader variants to minimize memory use.” “Fixed CPU/memory spike due to audio sources subscribing to an event on enable/disable.” | Lower memory use. TVGS does not call these crash fixes. |
| Sep 19, 2026 | v0.4.7 beta | “This should result in several-hundred megabytes saved in memory use for late-game saves.” | Kept in the full release on Oct 9. See the save warning. |
| Oct 9, 2026 | v0.4.7 | “Fixed runtime-generated icons not being cleared when exiting to menu, resulting in a memory leak.” “Stored items are now pooled instead of instantiated and destroyed, mitigating stuttering in late-game saves with many employees.” | One memory leak fixed, less late-game stutter. TVGS does not call these crash fixes. |
What the table shows: TVGS has named one broad crash cause (NPC pathfinding, April 2025) and one workaround branch. Most other rows are specific edge cases. In the announcements we read, crashes are rarely named after April 2025, so an old guide may not explain a crash on a current version. We found no announcement that claims to fix launch crashes.
Still crashing?
Use the in-game bug report tool and leave “include save file” ticked (added in Patch #3), so TVGS can load your save. Include your version and branch.
