Schedule I 'Authentication Failed' Co-op Error: Fixes to Try
Short version: TVGS has never used the words "authentication failed" in a patch note, so there's no official fix for this exact message. The fixes that at least two public sources agree on: be Steam friends with the host and both be online, run the same game version (and the same Steam branch), verify game files, clear Steam's download cache, turn off VPN-type tools, and have the host invite you through Steam. If none of that works, check the join fixes TVGS has already shipped below.
What we know about this error
Players report “authentication failed” when joining a friend’s game. The first post in a Steam Bug Reports thread (started Aug 17, 2026) says: “every time we launch a game one or all of us get this error message.” The first post in a General Discussions thread (started Aug 26, 2026) says: “The other person gets this error while the game is loading”. As of Oct 25, 2026, neither thread has a reply from TVGS.
We searched all 73 Schedule I announcements on Steam (as of Oct 25, 2026). None of them contains the word “authentication”, so TVGS hasn’t said what causes this message or listed a fix for it. The steps below come from players and guide sites. Each one has at least two independent public sources.
1. Be Steam friends with the host, and both be online
Destructoid: “To add one to three friends to your Schedule I game, you need to add them as a friend on Steam”, and “all of you will need to be online before you can invite them to your game.” GamerBlurb says “Some players fixed it just by friending the host on Steam”.
This matters more since August 2026. Patch v0.4.6f12 (Aug 8) “Fixed a security vulnerability in which users could join a multiplayer game without being friends with the host.” So if joining without being friends ever worked for you, that was the bug, and it’s closed now.
2. Run the same version, on the same Steam branch
MiniTool: “Ensure that all players are on the same version of the game.” GamerBlurb: “Make sure both players are on the same version”.
Our addition: Schedule I often has an open beta running next to the default version. When TVGS started testing every update on a beta branch (the v0.3.4 open beta, April 2025), it said “Anyone can opt into the beta branch”. v0.4.7 was in open beta from Sep 19, 2026 until TVGS released it on Oct 9 (v0.4.7: Special Customers). As of Oct 25, 2026, that is TVGS’s latest announcement. If one of you is opted into a beta branch and the other isn’t, you may be on different versions. Check under Properties > Betas in Steam and pick the same option on both PCs. Our v0.4.7 page lists what v0.4.7 changes.
3. Verify the game files
Sportskeeda: “Right-click on the game and select Properties. Navigate to the Installed Files tab. Click Verify Integrity of Game Files.” GamerBlurb lists the same step (“Verify Game Files (Just in Case)”). In the General Discussions thread, one reply (Aug 30, 2026) says: “Try verifying the game files from steam.” Some players on the Steam forum also report that verifying the files helped, including in an older thread about not being able to invite friends when your Steam profile picture shows as a white box; results there were mixed.
In Steam: right-click Schedule I > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
4. Clear Steam’s download cache
Game Rant: “Go to Settings, Downloads tab. Select Clear Download Cache”. MiniTool gives the same steps and says Steam will restart afterwards.
5. Turn off VPN-type tools
Xboxplay.games says “a Virtual Private Network (VPN) could be the culprit behind Schedule I’s multiplayer woes.” Sportskeeda: “third-party applications like antivirus software, VPNs, or overlays can interfere with the game.” If you run a VPN or proxy tool on your PC, turn it off before you join.
One guide also recommends a paid “gaming VPN” to improve connections. We haven’t included that: it contradicts the step above, and we don’t recommend paid tools.
6. Have the host invite you through Steam
In Schedule I, you invite friends with “the plus icon in the top right-hand corner of your screen”, from the main menu or the pause screen (TVGS, Jan 2025). If that isn’t working, Xboxplay.games suggests pressing Shift + Tab to open the Steam overlay and sending the invite from your Steam friends list. A player in the General Discussions thread (Sep 9, 2026) got in this way: “when the host sent me an invite from steam messenger… i got in”.
7. Last resort: reinstall
MiniTool and Sportskeeda both put reinstalling the game last, after everything above.
Multiplayer join fixes TVGS has already shipped
This is our own list, taken from Schedule I’s Steam announcements. It shows what TVGS has already fixed around joining and loading into co-op games. If a friend is on an old build, or you’re following an old forum thread, these may explain what you’re seeing.
| Date | Update | What TVGS wrote (quoted) | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan 5, 2025 | v0.2.1 | “Fixed not joining correctly if an invite is accepted while you’re already in a game.” | Accepting an invite mid-game used to break the join. |
| Mar 27, 2025 | Patch #3 | “Increased client timeout threshold to 30s” | Joining a late-game save takes longer, and used to time out. |
| Mar 29, 2025 | Patch #4 | “A bug report is now automatically submitted if it takes more than 90 seconds to load into a multiplayer game.” | A long, failed join now reports itself to TVGS. |
| Apr 1, 2025 | Patch #5 | “Fixed a quest UI bug that was sometimes causing infinite loading screens in multiplayer.” | One cause of endless loading was fixed. |
| Nov 2, 2025 | v0.4.1 | “a lot of the connection issues in multiplayer are likely due to bandwidth limits being exceeded” | TVGS’s own diagnosis of connection problems. |
| Nov 18, 2025 | v0.4.1f12 | “Added a network replication queue system, which staggers the data being sent whenever a player joins a multiplayer game.” | Data is sent in stages when someone joins, to stay under those limits. |
| Aug 1, 2026 | v0.4.6 | “Rewrote the platform integration code (achievements, lobbies, invites, etc)” | Invites and lobbies run on rewritten code since this update. |
| Aug 8, 2026 | v0.4.6f12 | “Fixed a security vulnerability in which users could join a multiplayer game without being friends with the host.” | You now have to be Steam friends with the host (step 1). |
What the list shows: TVGS has worked on multiplayer joining again and again since co-op launched, but none of these notes names the “authentication failed” message. The Steam threads above were started in August 2026, after the v0.4.6 rewrite. We haven’t found anything that links the two, so treat that timing as a clue, not a cause.
Still stuck?
These come from only one source each, so treat them as leads, not confirmed fixes:
- The
cleartrashconsole command. A reply in the Bug Reports thread passes on a tip from Discord: runcleartrashin the console, then save and reload. The command is real: TVGS added it in Patch #6 (Apr 3, 2025), but described it as “Useful if you’re experiencing performance drops due to lots of trash items”, not as a join fix. - Turning off a Cloudflare app. The player who started the General Discussions thread wrote (Sep 8, 2026): “I verified the game files and also, which I think was the main cause, I disabled Cloudflare”. They didn’t say which Cloudflare tool, so this is one player’s claim we haven’t verified.
- Host a solo game first. GamerBlurb suggests the host start a new game, pick Skip Prologue, host it solo, exit, and then try joining together again.
If you still can’t join, post in the Schedule I Bug Reports forum on Steam with your version number and branch, so TVGS can see it.
