What Into the Abyss is

Into the Abyss is the 0.5 content update for Grounded 2. Obsidian announced it on June 8, 2026 and posted it on Steam on August 11, 2026 as Grounded 2’s “largest update yet”. The pond is called Skunk Pond in the release notes. For where it sits among Obsidian’s other updates, see our Grounded 2 update schedule.

The table above puts the June 8 teaser next to the release post, row by row. Each row links the two Obsidian posts and quotes the line it comes from. “Before” is what the teaser said, “after” is what the release notes say.

What the release notes list

From the 0.5.0 patch notes in Obsidian’s release post:

  • Swimming 2.0. “Burst” lets you dash in any direction while swimming, and you can lock on to enemies underwater.
  • Harpoon gun and Croakwurst Bomb. The Harpoon gun is ranged combat for the pond, and the Croakwurst Bomb is an underwater mine with a proximity fuse.
  • Omni-Clipper. A new Omni-Tool variant “allowing players to harvest underwater resources”.
  • Abyss gameplay. You hunt down the Diving Suit recipe, then craft it. There is a new Abyss map in the map menu.
  • PTS fast travel. Each Ranger Outpost PTS unit used to connect to one other unit. Now they are all connected, and adding a unit to the network costs Raw Science.
  • Other additions. Critter CAPZ collectibles, repeatable MIX.Rs, the Charcoal Canteen, and the return of Ziplines and ZIP.R.

What happened to it after launch

Obsidian’s later patches touched Into the Abyss content one after another. Each line below links the post and quotes the line that concerns the update.

What the patches say today

Only changes written in Obsidian’s notes, no judgement on our side:

  • Infused Ooze and the Tier 4 Omni-Axe. 0.5.0.5 says players must fight the O.G.R.R. Toe Biter Leviathan “as originally intended to upgrade to the Tier 4 Omni Axe”. 0.5.1 then removed Infused Ooze and changed the recipe. The notes don’t give the new recipe.
  • Leviathan and mosquitoes. 0.5.0.5 “Removed 50% of the spawns for Mosquitoes and Tiger Mosquitoes” and reduced the Leviathan’s damage and health.
  • Optical Discs. The release post says Optical Disks unlock Diving Suit recipes. 0.5.0.5 fixed a problem where, on some saves, Ominent employee remains were missing and “preventing players from picking up Optical Discs”. The post spells it “Discs” there and “Disks” in the release post.
  • Pond water. 0.5.1 “Fixed an issue where Players were unable to drink from the Pond.” and fixed filling the Ladybug Buggy’s Reservoir with Pond Water.
  • Air supply. 0.5.1 “Fixed a bug where the Bubble Diffuser could provide an infinite supply of air after being destroyed.”
  • Creative mode. 0.5.1 says “The Diving Suit is no longer required to open the hatch in Creative mode.”
  • Toe Biter Buggy. 0.5.0.4 made it follow you in the pond when you wear a diving suit. 0.5.1 fixed its Sweep ability doing no damage when the Buggy used it on its own.
