Grounded 2 Patch 0.5.0.5: Mosquito and Leviathan Changes
Short version: 0.5.0.5 (September 2, 2026) is Obsidian's balance response to the Into the Abyss update. There are far fewer mosquitoes and they chase you less, the O.G.R.R. Toe Biter Leviathan is weaker, and a Toe Biter Scythe bug that many players were using is gone. That bug fix changes how you reach the Tier 4 Omni Axe.
What changed: 0.5.0.4 → 0.5.0.5
| Area | 0.5.0.4 | 0.5.0.5 | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mosquito and Tiger Mosquito spawns | Full spawn count | 50% of spawns removed | About half as many mosquitoes. Obsidian says the never-ending fights and chases after Into the Abyss were especially common with mosquitoes. |
| Mosquito and Wasp vision range | Into the Abyss values | Significantly reduced (no number given) | They should notice you from shorter distances. Obsidian calls this a first step, so expect more tuning. |
| How far these creatures follow you | Into the Abyss values | Significantly reduced (no number given) | They should give up the chase sooner. |
| O.G.R.R. Toe Biter Leviathan | Woozy Attack; higher nymph spawn chance, damage and health | Woozy Attack removed; nymph spawn chance, damage and health all reduced | An easier boss fight. Perfect blocks now also stop its damage, which they didn't before. |
| Toe Biter Scythe with elemental upgrade | Gained the Chop effect | No Chop effect | The Scythe no longer shortcuts the Tier 4 Omni Axe upgrade. You have to beat the Leviathan to get it. |
| PS5 memory | Some players hit Out of Memory crashes | Improvements shipped as part of the cross-platform crash fixes | PS5 players who crashed with Out of Memory should update. Obsidian doesn't say it's fully fixed. |
| Missing Ominent employee remains (some saves) | Remains missing, so Optical Discs couldn't be picked up | Fixed on existing saves | Load the affected save again. The discs should now be retrievable without starting over. |
Where 0.5.0.5 fits: five patches in 22 days
Into the Abyss went live on August 11, 2026. 0.5.0.5 is the fifth fix in the series:
| Version | Date (UTC) | Days after launch | Main focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5.0.1 | Aug 11 | same day | Memory leaks after 1–3 hours of play, mosquitoes’ “infinite aggro range”, soft locks, a scanner problem on existing saves |
| 0.5.0.2 | Aug 12 | 1 | A Windows crash tied to blocked friends, a UI memory leak causing hitching on lower-end PCs |
| 0.5.0.3 | Aug 13 | 2 | Permanent equipment loss after dying with a status effect, PS5 crashes |
| 0.5.0.4 | Aug 19 | 8 | Logout saves not being overwritten, Ominent ladders that could break progression, Founders Pack items |
| 0.5.0.5 | Sep 2 | 22 | Creature aggression and Leviathan rebalance, PS5 Out of Memory, blocked objectives |
Putting the notes side by side shows three problems Obsidian has had to come back to. (This is our reading of the five changelogs; Obsidian hasn’t summarized it this way.)
- Mosquito aggression, two passes. 0.5.0.1 fixed mosquitoes having infinite aggro range. Two weeks later, 0.5.0.5 still had to halve their spawns and shorten how far they see and follow you. If mosquitoes still feel relentless after 0.5.0.5, Obsidian itself calls this a “first step”.
- Memory, three passes. Leaks after long sessions (0.5.0.1), a UI leak that caused hitching (0.5.0.2), and PS5 Out of Memory crashes (0.5.0.5). If you crash after an hour or two of play, check that you’re on 0.5.0.5 before trying anything else.
- Saves and progression, in all but one patch. 0.5.0.2 is the only one without a save or progression fix. The others fixed the diving deck scanner on existing saves (0.5.0.1), permanent equipment loss (0.5.0.3), logout saves and Ominent ladders (0.5.0.4), and BURG.L’s Head and missing Optical Discs (0.5.0.5). If a quest or item got stuck after Into the Abyss, load the save again on 0.5.0.5 before starting over. Several of these fixes apply to existing saves.
If you were relying on the Scythe’s Chop
Before 0.5.0.5, an elemental upgrade gave the Toe Biter Scythe the Chop effect. Obsidian now counts that as a bug. The upgrade path works as originally designed, so you have to beat the O.G.R.R. Toe Biter Leviathan to upgrade to the Tier 4 Omni Axe. Obsidian says it has seen how much players liked the bug and is looking into bringing the function back in some form, with “no promises”.
If you beat the Leviathan and got no Infused Ooze, Obsidian’s advice is to check the floor around the boss arena.
Save and progression fixes worth knowing
- The “BURG.L’s Head” objective could get blocked on some saves. It’s fixed now.
- Ominent employee remains that were missing on some saves now appear, so you can pick up the Optical Discs.
- Client players’ backpacks could float under the map. That’s fixed. Picking up your backpack while riding a buggy no longer dumps its contents into the buggy inventory.
Co-op fixes
- Players can no longer damage each other with the Omni Clipper.
- Hiding one player’s icon no longer hides every player icon for the whole session.
- Players should now be able to respawn at the Gnarly Bark Outpost.
What didn’t change
Obsidian says players are still hitting other issues and that it hopes to release “a bigger patch as soon as possible”. This page covers 0.5.0.5 only. Check the Grounded 2 patch timeline for later versions.
