Grounded 2 Crashing on PC: Fixes and What Patches Fixed
Short version: Obsidian has fixed crashes at launch, on loading a save, in co-op and in specific actions in more than a dozen patches, so first make sure you are on the latest version. 0.5.1 and 0.5.1.1 contain no crash fixes; the Rot and Ruin 0.6.0 notes posted on Oct 20, 2026 do list some. If you still crash on the latest build, the cause is more likely on your PC or a bug Obsidian hasn't fixed yet. The fixes two or more sources agree on are: update, verify game files, and update graphics drivers.
Obsidian has fixed Grounded 2 crashes in more than a dozen patches since launch. That means the first question is not “which setting do I change” but “which version am I on, and was my crash already fixed?” This page lists every crash line from Obsidian’s Steam patch notes (checked Oct 16, 2026), grouped by what you were doing when the game crashed. Below that are the PC fixes that at least two public sources agree on.
At our Oct 16 check, the latest version was Hotfix 0.5.1.1 (Oct 1, 2026). Neither it nor 0.5.1 fixed any crash.
Newer notes (Oct 20, 2026): after that check, Obsidian posted the Rot and Ruin 0.6.0 patch notes. They list crash fixes, including “Fixed several crashes on PS5 and PC, including crashes related to buildings, visual effects, status effects, creature AI, and loading saves.” The post doesn’t say in so many words that 0.6.0 is live on Steam, so the tables below still stop at 0.5.1.1.
Newer notes (Oct 28, 2026): Patch 0.6.0.4 “has released on all available platforms” (checked Oct 29, 2026). Its Stability section lists: “Fixed several crashes involving creature AI, combat, pets and buggies, items, survival status effects, and loading screens.” and “Fixed crashes involving building paint, the map, and perks.” There is also a Playgrounds fix: “Fixed a crash when placing an Everchar Diffuser on a Bubble Diffuser.”
Newer notes (Nov 4, 2026): Patch 0.6.0.5 says “Patch 0.6.0.5 is now available!”, so the latest version is now 0.6.0.5 (from our copy of Obsidian’s Steam news saved Nov 5, 2026). Its Stability section has two crash fixes: “Fixed a crash related to world streaming.” and “Fixed a crash caused by the game running out of object memory.” We haven’t sorted the 0.6.0.4 and 0.6.0.5 lines into the tables below yet, so update to 0.6.0.5 before you try the fixes.
If you still crash on the latest build, an old fix is not the answer, so go to the fixes section and then report it to Obsidian’s issue tracker.

All quotes below are Obsidian’s words from the linked Steam announcement. Where Obsidian gave no detail, the row says so. Public test builds are not listed. For the dates of every patch, see our Grounded 2 update schedule.
Crash at launch or on the login screen
| Version | Date | What Obsidian said |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1.1.2 | Jul 30, 2025 | “Fixed a crash for Steam players when players launch the game without Gaming Services enabled.” |
| 0.5.0.2 | Aug 12, 2026 | “Fixed a crash that would occur on Windows when you have a blocked user in your friends list” |
If you crashed on the login screen after the 0.5.0 update and have someone on your Xbox block list, 0.5.0.2 or later is the fix. Obsidian doesn’t say it is the only cause of login crashes.
Crash when loading a save
| Version | Date | What Obsidian said |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2 | Sep 30, 2025 | “Fixed a crash when loading a world with customized armor stand built.” |
| 0.4.0 | Apr 14, 2026 | “Fixed a bug where certain Shared World saves were crashing on load.” and “Fixed a bug where game could crash when loading huge amounts of save files.” |
| 0.4.0.2 | Apr 28, 2026 | “Fixed a crash when loading your world”, with the note “This is also the same bug where you would lose progress in your world after re-loading your same save” |
| 0.5.0.4 | Aug 19, 2026 | “Fixed a crash for clients that can occur when loading a save when buggies have are hauling planks” |
If your save crashes on load and you are below 0.4.0.2, update first. For the 0.5.0.4 bug (a co-op client loading a save while buggies are hauling planks), 0.5.0.4 or later is the fix. Our 0.5.0.5 patch page and 0.5.1 patch page cover save and progression fixes in the latest builds.
Crash in co-op or when someone joins
| Version | Date | What Obsidian said |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1.2 | Aug 6, 2025 | “Fixed a bug where Shared Worlds Crashed after prolonged gameplay” |
| 0.2 | Sep 30, 2025 | “Resolved an issue where freezes occurred when joining a multiplayer session.” |
| 0.3.0.3 | Feb 11, 2026 | “Fixed a crash when navigating to the chat box in a multiplayer pre-game lobby” |
| 0.5.0 | Aug 11, 2026 | “Fixed an issue that resulted in crash for the Host caused by the Client rejoins the session after their Buggy is ready to be retrieved from the Buffin’ Barrel.” |
| 0.5.0 | Aug 11, 2026 | “Fixed an issue where a player in a Playgrounds game could crash after joining a survival game via invite.” |
| 0.5.0 | Aug 11, 2026 | “Fixed an issue where the game would crash if the client Alt-Tabbed on the death screen for a while during a long play session.” |
Two of these are specific enough to check against what you did: the host crash when a client rejoins after calling a buggy, and the Playgrounds-to-survival invite crash. Both are fixed from 0.5.0.
Crash while doing one specific thing
| Version | Date | What Obsidian said |
|---|---|---|
| 0.1.3 | Aug 25, 2025 | Under “Crash Fixes”: “Resolved a crash triggered when fleeing from the ORC Wave.” and “Fixed crashes occurring when accessing various UI menus.” |
| 0.2 | Sep 30, 2025 | “Resolved an issue where alternating between Player’s and Buggy’s backpack in Resource Analyzer could result in game crash.” |
| 0.2.0.1 | Oct 7, 2025 | “Fixed multiple crashes retaining to Foliage” and “Fixed a crash when navigating through creature cards” |
| 0.2.2.3 | Dec 10, 2025 | “Fixed a crash when droplets would collide” and “Fixed a crash when sleeping” (also “Fixed a crash when Peeping on Xbox”) |
| 0.2.2.4 | Dec 12, 2025 | “Various more Crash/Stability improvements have been made around droplets” |
| 0.3.0 | Jan 27, 2026 | “Addressed a crash that occurred when Alt-tabbing on PC.”, “Fixed a crash relating to the BUILD.M menu.”, “Resolved a foliage-related crash that could occur under certain conditions.” and “Seasonal decorations can remain in your base past their respective holiday months without resulting in a crash.” |
| 0.4.0 | Apr 14, 2026 | “Fixed a bug where game was crashing after opening map menu while holding any blueprint.” |
| 0.4.1 | May 27, 2026 | “Fixed a bug where opening the Building Grid or crafting menus would cause a crash on lower end PCs.” and “Fixed an issue where the title would crash after removing/recycling the ladder.” |
The 0.3.0 notes also say “Eliminated a crash caused by PEEP.R tracking more than one item; PEEP.RR was moved back to 4 on all platforms.” The 0.2.2.3 notes say the PEEP.R tracking number was temporarily moved to 1 to stop a crash, so the limit has changed more than once. If you crash in a menu or on one action, find it above and check you are past that version.
Memory, GPU hangs and long sessions
| Version | Date | What Obsidian said |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2 | Sep 30, 2025 | “Fixed some memory leaks that would then lead to a Out Of Memory Crash” and “50% of the GPU Hangs experienced in 0.1.3 should be fixed in 0.2” |
| 0.5.0.1 | Aug 11, 2026 | “Memory improvements have been made to counter potential memory leaks after playing for 1-3 hours.” |
| 0.5.0.2 | Aug 12, 2026 | “Fixed a memory leak in our UI relating to Status Effects, causing significant hitching on lower end specs” |
| 0.5.0.5 | Sep 2, 2026 | “This includes improvements for players who have been receiving an Out of Memory crash on PS5” |
If the game runs fine for the first hour and then crashes or stutters badly, this is the group to check. The three 0.5.0.x entries are the PC-relevant memory work. The 0.5.0.5 line is about PS5, and Obsidian doesn’t say the same crash was on PC.
Patches where Obsidian gave no crash details, or no crash fix
| Version | Date | What Obsidian said |
|---|---|---|
| 0.3.0.2 | Jan 29, 2026 | “Fixed various crashes and improved the stability of the game by 20%.” (no crash details given) |
| 0.4.0.1 | Apr 15, 2026 | Fixes listed are not crash fixes. No crash fix. |
| 0.4.2 | Jun 17, 2026 | “Fixed various crashes in 0.4.2.” and “35% of the crashes hit in 0.4.1 should be fixed in 0.4.2” (no crash details given) |
| 0.4.2.1 | Jul 2, 2026 | “additional stability fixes” (no crash details given) |
| 0.4.2.2 | Jul 14, 2026 | “should continue to improve stability” (no crash details given) |
| 0.5.0.3 | Aug 13, 2026 | “Various Crash and stability fixes across all platforms” and “PS5 specific Crash fixes” (no crash details given) |
| 0.5.0.4 | Aug 19, 2026 | Also “Various Crash and Stability Fixes on all platforms” (no further details given) |
| 0.5.0.5 | Sep 2, 2026 | “Various crashes on all platforms have been addressed” (no crash details given) |
| 0.5.1 | Sep 24, 2026 | No crash fix in the notes. |
| 0.5.1.1 | Oct 1, 2026 | No crash fix. The only fix is Steam players failing to connect “based on their Steam Download Region”. |
These “various crashes” entries mean you can’t tell from the notes whether your crash was one of them. The practical rule: be on 0.5.0.5 or later before you troubleshoot anything else.
How much has crashing improved?
Obsidian has given a few numbers. They are its own estimates, each measured against the previous build, so they don’t add up to a total:
- 0.2: “around a 15% Stability Gain from 0.1.3” (and 50% of 0.1.3’s GPU hangs)
- 0.3.0.2: “improved the stability of the game by 20%”
- 0.4.2: “35% of the crashes hit in 0.4.1 should be fixed in 0.4.2”
Obsidian has not published a number for 0.5.x. Its 0.2 notes say “We will continue to check Stability throughout early access as we continue to make strides towards getting our crash rate as low as possible”, so more crash patches should be expected. Our update schedule has the usual gaps between updates.
Fixes for PC (Community-verified, not personally tested)
These steps come from public guides and Obsidian’s support page. We have not tried them on a PC. We list only steps that at least two sources give and that we opened. Several guides online are written to sell a game booster or are generic checklists, and we left out anything only one source says. We also left out BIOS and registry changes.
1. Update the game, then restart the client
Obsidian’s own patch notes are the strongest source here. Hotfix 0.4.0.1 says “If you don’t see the update right away, please try restarting Steam or verifying your game files.” LagZapper’s first fix is also to install the latest hotfix from the Steam or Xbox app library.
2. Verify the game files
Obsidian’s support page lists “Verify the integrity of the files” as step 3. LagZapper and LagoFast both give the same step for Steam and the Xbox app.
3. Update graphics drivers and Windows, and check temperatures
Obsidian’s support page lists, in order, updating graphics drivers, checking for operating system updates and checking for overheating. LagoFast and TheCPUGuide say the same about drivers and Windows updates, and LagoFast also lists overheating. Obsidian also lists removing any mods as one of the steps.
If it still crashes on 0.5.1.1
- Check that every fix above was done on the latest build.
- Match your symptom to the tables. If it isn’t listed anywhere, include exactly what you were doing when it crashed in your report.
- Report it on Obsidian’s issue tracker with your version number, platform and what you were doing.
