Grounded 2 Crossplay and Cross-Progression by Platform
Short version: As of Oct 31, 2026, Obsidian's FAQ says Grounded 2 supports cross-platform play and "saving progress between your PC and your Xbox console", and Steam players must link a Microsoft account. PS5 joined Early Access on Aug 11, 2026. Below: a platform table, a dated timeline of Obsidian's posts, and what those posts do not say about PS5 progress.
As of Oct 31, 2026: Obsidian’s Grounded 2 FAQ says “Grounded 2 supports both cross-platform play and saving progress between your PC and your Xbox console”, and “Steam players must link their Microsoft accounts to successfully access cross-platform capabilities.” PlayStation 5 joined Early Access on Aug 11, 2026. Obsidian’s support pages and Steam posts don’t say whether PS5 progress carries over to PC or Xbox. This page only repeats what Obsidian has written. For the step-by-step setup and join errors, see Grounded 2 join game failure fixes.
Platforms at a glance
What Obsidian’s own pages say, platform by platform. A blank claim means Obsidian hasn’t written it, not that it’s false.
| Platform | Where Obsidian lists it | Crossplay | Shared progress |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | FAQ (Jul 29, 2025); Aug 11, 2026 post | Yes | FAQ: “between your PC and your Xbox console” |
| PC, Xbox app | FAQ (Jul 29, 2025); Aug 11, 2026 post (“XBOX on PC”) | Yes | Xbox Play Anywhere: play “on both XBOX Series X|S and XBOX on PC at no additional cost” |
| PC, Steam | FAQ (Jul 29, 2025); Aug 11, 2026 post | Yes, after linking a Microsoft account (FAQ) | The FAQ says “your PC”, without naming Steam or the Xbox app |
| Steam Deck | Patch 0.4.1 (May 27, 2026) | Since 0.4.1, Deck users “can now link a Microsoft account and play online with their friends/use crossplay functionality” | Not stated |
| PlayStation 5 | Aug 11, 2026 post; support page 239 (updated Aug 11, 2026) | Yes, per support page 239 and the PS5 crossplay fixes below | Not stated |
| ROG XBOX Ally | Aug 11, 2026 post | Not stated | Not stated |
The FAQ was last updated on Jul 29, 2025, a year before the PS5 launch, so its answer only names PC and Xbox. The newer Cross Platform Support page (updated Aug 11, 2026) opens with “Now that Grounded 2 is available on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation”, but it covers how to turn crossplay on, not where saves live.
What you need for crossplay
From Obsidian’s Cross Platform Support page:
- “a free Xbox Live account” for “the cross-platform multiplayer, Shared Worlds, and the ability to upload and download Playgrounds”.
- “a subscription to their platform’s specific online service”.
- “you can only link one Microsoft/Xbox account to the game, so make sure it’s the correct one.”
The page also says your “Xbox Gamer Tag, Steam Username, or PSN ID will appear at the top right of the screen under the game version number”. Once your Xbox Gamertag shows in the top right corner of the main menu, crossplay is linked. The full steps, and what to check when a join still fails, are on our join game failure page.
What Obsidian has said, in order
Steam announcements for Grounded 2 (app 2661300), plus the two support pages, that mention crossplay, Microsoft accounts, Shared Worlds or the PS5 version. Dates are UTC, from each post’s publish time on Steam.
| Date (UTC) | Post | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Jul 29, 2025 | Grounded 2 FAQ (support page) | Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Windows PC “via the Xbox app and Steam”. Supports “cross-platform play and saving progress between your PC and your Xbox console.” |
| Jul 30, 2025 | Hotfix 0.1.1.2 | Fixed a Steam crash when launching “without Gaming Services enabled”. “This fix disables Crossplay from being enabled.” Players without Gaming Services “will be able re-enable crossplay after a restart” once Xbox Services are installed through the Xbox app. |
| Aug 6, 2025 | Patch 0.1.2 | “Created a flow for Steam players to access Crossplay”. Also fixed “a bug on the backend that would cause Shared World saves to be lost indefinitely”. |
| Aug 25, 2025 | Patch 0.1.3 | “Fixed various issues on the backend with not being to login to your Microsoft account on all platforms” |
| May 27, 2026 | Patch 0.4.1 | “As of this update, Steam Deck Users can now link a Microsoft account and play online with their friends/use crossplay functionality” |
| Jun 8, 2026 | Into the Abyss announcement | “Coming to PlayStation 5 on August 11, 2026” |
| Aug 11, 2026 | Into the Abyss: The Biggest Grounded 2 Update Yet | Grounded 2 is “in Early Access on Steam and PlayStation 5” and in Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, XBOX on PC and ROG XBOX Ally. Fixed a bug where “after closing the Xbox account login prompt the crossplay button would become broken”. |
| Aug 11, 2026 | Cross Platform Support (support page) | Updated to say Grounded 2 “is available on Xbox, PC, and PlayStation”. |
| Sep 24, 2026 | Patch 0.5.1 | “Fixed an issue where Shared Worlds were still accessible with crossplay disabled on PS5” |
| Oct 20, 2026 | Rot and Ruin Update | “Fixed an issue where the game would crash on PlayStation 5 when joining a Playground hosted on Xbox Series X”. Lists the Shared Worlds on PS5 fix again: “Fixed an issue where Shared Worlds were accessible with crossplay disabled on PS5”. Also: “Fixed an issue where renamed multiplayer shared world saves reverted to their original names on game restart”. |
Two patterns in this list:
- Steam crossplay was rough at launch, then fixed in steps. Within the first month: a crash fix that turned crossplay off for players without Gaming Services, then a crossplay flow for Steam, then Microsoft login fixes “on all platforms”.
- PS5 fixes keep touching crossplay and Shared Worlds. The same “crossplay disabled on PS5” Shared Worlds fix shows up in both 0.5.1 and the Rot and Ruin notes. Obsidian doesn’t explain why it is listed twice.
What the posts settle, and what they don’t
Settled by Obsidian’s own words
- Grounded 2 has cross-platform play, and Steam players need to link a Microsoft account for it (FAQ).
- Progress can be shared “between your PC and your Xbox console” (FAQ, Jul 29, 2025).
- Xbox Series X|S and XBOX on PC are covered by Xbox Play Anywhere (Jun 8 and Aug 11, 2026 posts).
- Steam Deck can link a Microsoft account and use crossplay since Patch 0.4.1 (May 27, 2026).
- PS5 has been in Early Access since Aug 11, 2026, and Obsidian has fixed several PS5 crossplay bugs since.
- Only one Microsoft/Xbox account can be linked to the game (support page 239).
Not settled in these pages
- Whether PS5 progress carries over to PC or Xbox, or the other way. No Obsidian page we checked says so.
- Whether Steam’s local single-player saves sync to Xbox. The FAQ says “your PC” and doesn’t separate Steam from the Xbox app.
- What happens if you link the wrong Microsoft account, or how to change it. The support page only warns you to pick the right one.
- Whether ROG XBOX Ally shares progress or has crossplay. The Aug 11 post lists it as a platform and says nothing else.
If you need a firm answer on any of these, Obsidian’s contact page is the place to ask.
