Enshrouded Multiplayer Quests: What Carries Over

Published October 12, 2026

Short version: Your character carries gear, levels, skills and some personal discoveries to any server. Workbench recipes, summonable NPCs and towers others found stay in the world. Quests were server-wide at first; since June 2024 you can also complete missed ones yourself. The 1.0.0.0 changelog mentions no change to this, but it resets your skill tree.

As of Nov 3, 2026: Enshrouded is on 1.0.1.0 (Patch #1, Nov 2). The 1.0.0.0 changelog mentions no change to multiplayer quest progression or to what your character carries between worlds, and neither do hotfixes 1.0.0.1 to 1.0.0.3 or Patch #1. 1.0.0.0 does reset your skill tree and convert old saves to a new format.

What follows your character and what stays in the world

Keen’s own FAQ answers the question “Can I use my character on another server?” with: “You can absolutely take your favorite character with you and swap between servers.” The table below is built only from that answer. Every row cites the official FAQ (first opened Oct 3, 2026, checked again after 1.0 on Oct 15, 2026; the page shows no last-updated date).

ProgressGoes with your character?FAQ wordingSource
Equipment and inventoryYes“They will retain their entire equipment and inventory”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Levels and unlocked skillsYes“as well as levels / skills unlocked”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Map memoryYes“Map memory (locations and fog of war removed)”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Personal crafting recipesYes“crafting that does not require a workbench”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Collected Shroud rootsYes“you cannot farm Shroud roots by making new worlds”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Lore texts and tutorialsYes“Previously found lore texts and tutorials”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Towers you found yourselfYes“Towers you found by yourself”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Most other crafting recipesNo, stays in the world“dependent on NPCs and crafting stations unlocked in the world”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Summonable NPCsNo, stays in the world“gotta liberate them in the new world, too!”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026
Towers found by others and shared with the groupNo, stays in the world“Towers that were found by others and shared with the group”FAQ, checked Oct 15, 2026

What this means for you: if you join a friend’s world, you arrive with your whole kit, but the recipes and helpers tied to stations and NPCs depend on what that world has unlocked. The FAQ does not say what happens to quest completion when you move to a different world, so we don’t guess. Quests are covered in the next section.

Quests: how Keen’s rules changed

Our addition here is the order of events. Older articles describe only the first row, which is why they are out of date.

DateWhat Keen saidSource
Feb 9, 2024Quest progression is “mainly server-side instead of player-side”. Keen says it wants “an option to be able to personally complete every quest”, and that “the system as it is now will not be replaced”. It gave no timeline. On Quest Progression
Apr 17, 2024“Server-wide quests and personal quests are now sorted in the quest journal.”Patch #3
Jun 5, 2024“The option to complete Embervale quests individually in multiplayer! All missed quests are listed in the quest journal, which can be toggled on at any time.” Quest participation “has been tracked since the release of Hollow Halls”, so earlier quests “will show up as missing, and may have to be completed again”.Melodies of the Mire
Nov 21, 2024A fix mentions a character “that has the quest progression mode set to ‘missed quests’” creating a new world, so that it no longer blocks the first door in the Cinder Vault start cave.Patch #5
May 13, 2025“Added new triggers to quests so that personal quests get completed more reliably while playing in a party.”Thralls of Twilight
Dec 16, 2025“Improved the handling of quest progress saving for players to avoid edge case issues in some quests”.Patch #12
Apr 21, 2026Quest log rework: quests split into main and side quests, and “the overall number of quests has been significantly reduced”, partly thanks to Item Sets. Players with many items already unlocked “will receive a big XP boost when loading their save”.Forging the Path

How to read this:

  • Server-wide is still the base rule. In the Feb 2024 post Keen said the existing system stays and personal progress is an extra option. We found no later post that removes the shared system.
  • Personal completion is optional. The June 2024 notes say missed quests can be turned on “at any time”, so a late joiner or a friend who was offline can still do them.
  • The Feb 2024 post also says group play raises the chance of bonus loot in chests and bosses, and that enemy strength scales with group size. Keen wrote those as already existing systems at that time.
  • Respawns. The same post says respawn timers were already reduced to 30 minutes, so a boss can be fought again or a Shroud root destroyed again. We have not checked whether that number has changed since.

What changed in 1.0 (October 15, 2026)

Keen’s release date post set October 15 for Enshrouded to leave Early Access on Steam, and 1.0 came out that day as version 1.0.0.0 (Keen’s launch post). We read the full 1.0.0.0 changelog and Keen’s launch FAQ. Neither changes the rules above for who completes a quest in multiplayer or what follows your character.

TopicBefore 1.0 (documented above)1.0.0.0 changelog and launch FAQ
Multiplayer quest rulesServer-wide, plus optional personal completionNo rule change mentioned. New label: “Quests now show whether they are personal quests or world quests.”
Quest listMain and side quests since Update 8Main quests “for important progression steps or story elements”, side quests “for more optional exploration and loot”. Quests are marked difficult when “the target area and its enemies are 2 levels above the character level or more.”
What follows the characterThe FAQ list aboveNot mentioned. The FAQ answer above still reads the same (checked Oct 15, 2026).
Old savesEarly Access saves“You can absolutely use Early Access saves once the game releases in 1.0.” Saves are converted to a new format, and those “created with version 0.8 or earlier” are backed up first. Keen still “strongly” encourages starting over.
Skill treeReset in Update 8“When playing for the first time in version 1.0.0.0 with an existing save game, the skill tree will be reset.” (see our 1.0 combat changes page)

The skill tree reset is the 1.0 change that touches your character. Keen: “Please make sure to spend the skill points again!” If you play in a group, each player has to do it on their first session in 1.0.

Hotfix 1.0.0.2 (Oct 16, 2026) has one fix that touches your character. Keen fixed “a rare crash during save game migration” that happened when loading “a corrupted character save”, and says: “With this hotfix, such corrupted characters will not be migrated.” Keen says it is working on a fix that migrates and repairs those characters, with no date given. If a character is missing from your list, Keen’s advice is “please be patient - help is on the way!” (Hotfix 1.0.0.2 changelog, checked Oct 17, 2026)

Hotfix 1.0.0.3 (Oct 21, 2026) follows up on save migration. Keen “Improved the save data migration process in case a character has invalid entries in the additional backpack slots”, and says: “Characters should now migrate correctly, without the items that previously caused the process to stop.” So those characters come across, minus the problem items. Keen doesn’t say whether this is the fix promised in 1.0.0.2 or whether it covers every character 1.0.0.2 left out. The same hotfix also fixed “a rare crash that could occur during the save data migration process”, and for bases whose Flame Altar wasn’t placed in the voxel grid, “the affected player base’s water can’t be loaded and must be re-added as needed.” (Hotfix 1.0.0.3 changelog, checked Oct 22, 2026)

Patch #1 (Nov 2, 2026), version 1.0.1.0, lists two save migration lines under “PC-specific”: “Fixed several cases that could cause a save data migration to trigger an error. If a save file caused migration issues before, please try the migration again with this update.” and “Increased the memory budget for the total sum of all player bases during the save data migration. This fix only affects save data with too many player bases.” Neither line mentions characters, so Keen still hasn’t said whether the fix promised in 1.0.0.2 has shipped. The only quest line in Patch #1 is about hairstyles: “The previous update unfortunately unlocked all hairstyles in the character creation menu, even the hairstyles that are quest rewards.” Keen says this is fixed, and players who already picked one of those hairstyles “may of course keep their hair”. Keen doesn’t say which earlier version it means by “the previous update”. (Patch #1 changelog, checked Nov 3, 2026)

Playing with friends on console? Keen’s launch FAQ says “Enshrouded will not be cross-platform at launch”.

If you run your own server and it vanishes from the list after an update, see Enshrouded dedicated server not showing after update.
